 Experienced Scholar Group (ESG):

Consists of 2 from JHTR and 2 from Research Committee

  • Evaluate quality of submissions based on the given criteria at each stage (e.g., IMPACT).
  • Selective teams move on to next stage.

 Timeline (one-year event)

  1. Call for participants and ICHRIE, EuroCHRIE, & ApacCHRIE promote 2023 CHRIE Global Research Marathon in collaboration with JHTR with their members via email and social media.
  2. Participants will be selected based on their eligibility (ICHRIE members, Group attends all three conferences, Faculty members only, possibly exceptional Ph.D. students), topic of interest and expertise.
  3. Finalize teams taking part in the marathon and notify them via email.
  4. Online orientation session: kickoff the event – the intro, forming of teams, and starting the work
  5. Teams attend all three CHRIE conferences and receive feedback from JHTR editors and fellow scholars.
  6. Based on the feedback, teams revise their papers and plan to submit final manuscript by xx.
  7. Rigorous peer review will take place but fast track process

 Teams are matched in February.

Required Orientation around early March (2 hours):

  • Introduction & set clear expectations & Dos and Don’ts
  • Put teams into breakout rooms and let them brainstorm
  • Have teams come up with 2-3 ideas
  • Experienced Scholar Group provides them feedback

 Online Orientation Session:

 Kick-off Zoom event

-        Online event (3-hours) is hosted by Deniz.

-        Short introduction first, an instruction followed by teams’ going into breakout rooms (with experienced scholar group visiting these breakout rooms for a few minutes), plenary elevator pitches, rounding off.

-        Teams pitch their research ideas (2 minutes / 3 min feedback and advice).

ESG advice:

 Conferences:

APacCHRIE, 25-27 May 2023 Clark, The Philippines (Face to Face conference but online event for the research marathon)

-        Submit a written abstract (2-page max) of a research proposal (i.e., title, background/rationale, research aim/objectives, proposed method, timeline, references) prior to the conference.

-        Online event (3-hours) is hosted by Deniz.

-        Teams present their proposed research (20 minutes / 10 min presentation and 10 min for Q&A).

-        Experienced Scholar Group decides which groups move on to the next stage after evaluating their abstract and oral presentation based on the criteria below.

Is the proposed research:

Innovative?

Meaningful?

Practically relevant?

Academically rigorous?

Cross disciplinary?

Theory focused

a. Innovative: Does the submission provide new and insightful ways of exploring and conceptualizing an issue; offer different, unique, or controversial perspectives on a research topic; and/or bring together ideas, theories, and concepts in novel and thought-provoking way?
b. Meaningful: Does the submission appeal to a broad range of academic and non-academic audiences and address issues that are meaningful and significant to scholars as well as non-academic stakeholders such as hospitality and tourism and practitioners, policy makers, and/or consumers in related fields?
c. Practically relevant: Does the submission clearly address the “so what” question by highlighting the managerial and policy implications of their research?
d. Academically rigorous: Is this submission conceptually and methodologically rigorous? Research published in JHTR should have progressed through a rigorous, proper, and stringent knowledge development process that ensures that the output is academically sound. Authors must identify a clear theoretical approach and articulate how the research advances our understanding of particular topics, concepts, or theories.
e. Cross disciplinary: While not a requirement for publication, we welcome contributions to theory that are not only relevant to hospitality and tourism but can transcend our disciplinary boundaries and potentially apply across other disciplines and/or contexts.
f. Theory focused: Does the submission cultivate concepts, frameworks, models, and theories that extend our understanding of relevant hospitality and tourism phenomena and inform the direction of future research? We particularly encourage and champion the development of theories and frameworks that originate from the hospitality and tourism field. Accordingly, contributing authors should pay particular attention to the interplay between concepts and contexts to create opportunities for theory building that captures the complexities, intricacies, and dynamics of hospitality and tourism phenomena.
3. International CHRIE, 19-21 July 2023, Phoenix, AZ, U.S.

-        Pre-conference face to face event – afternoon (3-hours) is hosted by Faizan and Jenna.

-        Teams present their research progress.

-        20 min presentation including 10 min Q&A

-        Each team will:

    • Develop hypotheses
    • Determine design structure
    • Identify key IVs and DVs
    • Identify population and sample
    • Select statistical test for resolving hypothesis

 4. EuroCHRIE, Oct, 2023, Vienna

-        Online event (3-hours) is hosted by Danny.

-        Teams present their research progress.

-        Each team will:

    • Collect data/results of study
    • Analyze data
    • Report conclusions

Expectations:

  • Teams are required to meet regularly once every two or three weeks.
  • Each team consists of members based in North America, Europe, and Asia. Finding a time for regular meetings that works for everyone will be a challenge. But remember one of the purposes for Global Research Marathon is connecting people from all over the world.
  • One group member needs to be physically present at each conference.
  • There may be too many team members and not everyone was committed to the work. If there are team members do not contribute to the project, they can be let go. This is another reason for a big group size – not everyone in the team will make it through the final stage.

Rules:

  • Disqualify groups who simply send a recorded presentation without anyone participating (not even online). They can, of course, continue working toward submitting a paper, but their participation in the sessions would be over.
  • Disqualify pre-recorded presentations (even when a member participates online for Q&A). Presenting your research is part of the process, and pre-recording the presentation easily leads to just reading sentences off notes.
