ANNUAL ICHRIE CASE COMPETITION – 2026

International CHRIE and Johnson & Wales University invite cases for the annual ICHRIE Case Competition. All cases submitted to the ICHRIE Case Study Competition are peer-reviewed and considered for publication in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Cases, an International Case Journal. The JHTC is a Scopus-indexed journal published by Sage Publications. The three most meritorious cases will receive recognition, promotion, and financial prizes at the 2026 ICHRIE Global Conference.

• 1^st Prize: US $ 1,000 + Free ICHRIE Conference Registration
• 2^nd Prize: US $750
• 3^rd Prize: US $250

Submission Guidelines

The cases may focus on any topic and subject area related to the tourism & hospitality business and/or education. Case studies may be developed from field research, published sources, and/or generalized experiences. The organization’s name and key protagonists may be disguised at the organization's request and/or in cases involving ethical dilemmas. However, the extent of disguise and reason for disguise must be included in the teaching note.

Purely fictional/hypothetical cases are not accepted.

Case studies are expected to include sections related to the following topics:

• A background of the subject organization and/or of the topic.
• An analysis of the dilemma/decision and the teaching objectives.
• A review of the key theories that students are expected to learn and apply.
• A section discussing the questions and their detailed answers to resolve the dilemmas and/or decisions of the case study.
• A list of related references, video lists, and additional readings.
• It is highly desirable to test the cases in a classroom before submitting them to the competition, but it is not mandatory.
• The traditional research paper format is not acceptable for this case competition.

The case study must be a maximum of 5,000 words, excluding figures, tables, appendices, and related references. Each case study submission must be accompanied by teaching notes with no maximum word limit. However, a teaching note of a minimum of 1,000 words is expected. The case studies and the teaching notes will be evaluated against three criteria:

• Quality of the content.
• Theoretical underpinnings.
• Case presentation.

No editorial decisions are made on the cases before the competition winners have been selected.

Submission Deadline

Cases must be submitted at the JHTC website: https://journals.sagepub.com/home/HTC   

• On the journal portal, please make sure that you select “2026 Case Competition” as the submission type.
• Cases submitted past the due date cannot be considered for the ICHRIE Case Competition, but they may be considered for regular issues of JHTC.
• Please be advised that the editors cannot accept cases sent by email, as we cannot submit them on your behalf.
