THAT’S A WRAP!

The 9^th Annual SECSACHRIE Conference, hosted by the College of Hospitality, Retail & Sport Management at the University of South Carolina (USC), under the theme Where history, culture and southern hospitality meet, was a resounding success. During the two days, we networked with, participated in, and listened to 63 presentations from 27 universities and companies, alongside 97 conference attendees and participants. We saw a record number of pedagogy presentations as the SECSA community continues to celebrate research and content in this area. 

We extend our profound gratitude to Mr. Troy Flanagan of the AHLA for his informative and eye-opening keynote address reviewing issues surrounding staffing, as we embrace our role as educators in providing exceptional employees for our industry. Our industry panel was diverse, covering the legal, lodging, beverage and DMO components of our industry. I quote the industry panel moderator and Director of Research, Dr. Wei Wei:

CHRIE FutureFund™ Thanks ICHRIE Members

CHRIE FutureFund™ had a very successful Annual Conference in Phoenix and thank all ICHRIE members who supported CHRIE FutureFund™ initiatives.  The leadership of co-chairs Misty Johanson and Carl Winston resulted in the support of five (5) doctoral students attending the Annual Conference as winners of the inaugural Dissertation Competition, and four (4) Best Paper Winners from the Graduate Conference held last January. The return of the highly anticipated Duck Race drew a raucous crowd around the Lazy River at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa and raised just shy of $2,000.  The annual 50-50 Raffle raised a record $4,060. Along with the $4,000 donation to support the Grad Conference Best Paper Winners, your Future Fund raised approximately $10,000 to date in 2023. This achievement would not be possible without your support.
 
The CHRIE FutureFund™ has identified support for graduate education and the support of graduate students as a primary objective. Graduate students are the future professoriate, so supporting our future helps ensure member institutions have qualified, talented individuals on their teams, and these future faculty will become leaders within their respective programs and ICHRIE. Over the next several weeks we will introduce you to the individual doctoral students we supported this year.  Each has a wonderful story to tell, and each will be a terrific addition to any hospitality program. For now, we share the work for which each won their respective award.

At our upcoming 2023 Annual ICHRIE Summer Conference, we are having a closing reception on Friday, 21 July at the beautiful HEARD Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. We are excited to be sharing a real sense of place at our conference location and can’t wait to share this incredible museum with all of our conference attendees. The Heard Museum sets the standard for collaborating with American Indian artists and tribal communities to provide a distinctive perspective on the art and history of Native people, especially those from the Southwest.

Since its founding by Dwight and Maie Bartlett Heard in 1929, the Heard Museum has become recognized internationally for the quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming, and its unmatched festivals. Dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art, the Heard presents the stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective, as well as exhibitions that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary art.
 
We will be departing from the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa hotel at 5:00 PM by executive motor coaches to the Heard Museum. The reception at the Heard will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and the return coaches will be back at the hotel by 9:00 PM. The Heard is located close to the wonderful restaurants of Scottsdale, should anyone want to have dinner on their own and return by taxi or Uber. We will have a list of Scottsdale restaurants for you to consider at conference registration with contact information for any private reservations you might want to reserve.

The Career Fair is back again for the 2023 Annual ICHRIE Summer Conference in Phoenix, Arizona USA.

On Friday, 21st July, we’ll shift focus to the “education” portion of the Education & Innovation Center (EIC) when we host the Career Fair and poster presentations over lunch.

 

The NENA CHRIE Federation held its spring regional conference this year at West Virginia University’s John Chambers College of Business and Economics Hospitality Management Program in Morgantown, West Virginia from March 31-April 2, 2023. The Conference was a great success! We were thrilled to have a robust schedule of research papers and poster presentations along with keynote speakers and panelists from industry and academia, as well as interactive workshops all focused on the conference theme of “Innovate Everywhere”. Attendance was much higher than anticipated and we continue to have a growing cohort of grad students attend and present their work at this regional conference. It is wonderful to see their excitement and passion for higher education and our industry early in their career.

Objectives:

The 2022 CentralCHRIE Conference was hosted in conjunction with the Purdue University White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management’s inaugural annual Spirit of Hospitality Summit on September 29^th and 30^th. It was well attended with a number of industry professionals, faculty, and staff traveling from outside of the Purdue community as well as faculty and students (both graduate and undergraduate level) from Purdue University. CentralCHRIE was represented by seven states and ten universities with approximately 34 member attendees. The Hospitality Summit featured over 30 educational sessions along with four keynote sessions, a networking event, a poster session sponsored by CentralCHRIE, and reception for CentralCHRIE members, all of which provided federation members with opportunities to engage with various programs.

In the Summer 2022 issue of the Pamplin Pulse, the Virginia Tech’s TLOS, Thinkabit, and the MSBA-HTM program were featured for their contributions at the ICHRIE Conference’s Education and Innovation Center (EIC) at the 2022 Annual International CHRIE Summer Conference.
