It’s been a great year for International CHRIE and our members. We can’t wait for you to see what we have planned for 2024.
 
Here’s a sneak peek:

It’s time to nominate yourself or someone else for senior leadership positions on the ICHRIE Board of Directors.  We have five (5) open board positions. Hopefully, one or more will be of interest and fit you well.

I am Kate Price-Howard from Troy University’s Global Campus, with our main campus being in Troy, Alabama. I will be representing ESD in the role of Director of Marketing this academic year and wanted to take this opportunity to introduce, thank, and welcome many of our members and highlight our upcoming events!   As we approach a new academic year and the Fall semester, we would not be able to continue thriving forward without the amazing team of outgoing board members who helped ESD become who we are today. A tremendous THANK YOU goes out to Ralf Burbach (ICHRIE – President), Godwin-Charles Ogbeide (Director of Marketing), Ruth Lee O’Rourke (Immediate Past Chair), and Andrea White-McNeil (SECSA).   While we are sad to see this team leave the board, this also gives us the opportunity to welcome the new members stepping in and stepping up to fulfill their forward progression. Please help me welcome the following: Chrystel Masdupuy (ICHRIE – President), Alessia Moretti (Euro CHRIE) from César Ritz Colleges Switzerland, Dr. Heather Lewis (SECSA), and myself as Director of Marketing. Heather and I both represent Troy University. This year we have some exciting events lined up and wanted to get this information out to all chapters as soon as possible! This fall ESD events will kick off with The International Travel Show in New York, New York from 26-28 October 2023. This event includes a networking and professional development event on Wednesday, 25 October 2023, and the New York City Tourism + Conventions Tour on Thursday, 26 October 2023. Registration is under ESD Events on the ICHRIE webpage! In February 2024, we fly south to Miami, Florida for Eta Sigma Delta’s first Undergraduate Student Research Symposium at FIU (north campus) on 21 February 2023. This will coincide with the famous South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF) hosted by FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. For those interested in the event industry, there are plenty of opportunities available to gain hands-on experience by volunteering for this event! In May 2024, we will head to Chicago, Illinois for the National Restaurant Association Show from 18-21 May 2024. This will include a back-of-the-house show tour and many networking opportunities! We hope that you will help us market these exciting international events for our ESD students, faculty, and affiliates and we hope to see you there!   Make sure to establish a chapter, if your college doesn’t already have one, and let this serve as a reminder to renew your current memberships as well. CHRIE FutureFund™ Thanks ICHRIE Members

CHRIE FutureFund™ had a very successful Annual Conference in Phoenix and thank all ICHRIE members who supported CHRIE FutureFund™ initiatives.  The leadership of co-chairs Misty Johanson and Carl Winston resulted in the support of five (5) doctoral students attending the Annual Conference as winners of the inaugural Dissertation Competition, and four (4) Best Paper Winners from the Graduate Conference held last January. The return of the highly anticipated Duck Race drew a raucous crowd around the Lazy River at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa and raised just shy of $2,000.  The annual 50-50 Raffle raised a record $4,060. Along with the $4,000 donation to support the Grad Conference Best Paper Winners, your Future Fund raised approximately $10,000 to date in 2023. This achievement would not be possible without your support.
 
The CHRIE FutureFund™ has identified support for graduate education and the support of graduate students as a primary objective. Graduate students are the future professoriate, so supporting our future helps ensure member institutions have qualified, talented individuals on their teams, and these future faculty will become leaders within their respective programs and ICHRIE. Over the next several weeks we will introduce you to the individual doctoral students we supported this year.  Each has a wonderful story to tell, and each will be a terrific addition to any hospitality program. For now, we share the work for which each won their respective award.
 

Graduate Conference Best Paper Winners:

Barbara Atanga & Lavi Peng – Customer misbehavior: The joint impact of a symbolic recovery strategy and cultural tightness-looseness on observing customers’ recovery satisfaction (along with supervising professor Anna Mattila) The Pennsylvania State University.
 
Araceli Hernandez Calderon – Theory-driven predictive modeling for food-service crowdfunding success: An integrated approach with business intelligence and supervised machine learning (along with supervising professors Yoon Koh & Minwoo Lee) University of Houston.
 
Wangoo Lee – Examining the “waiting line” effect during menu ordering with self-service technologies (along with supervising professor Lu Lu) Temple University.
 

Dissertation Proposal Winners:

 
Hamzeh Hammadeen – Leveraging the distinct competencies of highly skilled immigrant employees in hotels (Auburn University).
 
Wenfang Liu – An exploration on ghost kitchen business model: Kitchen rental firms and entrepreneurs' investment motivation (University of Houston).
 
Swechchha Subedi – Conceptualization of governance in H & T and the role of trust (University of South Carolina).
 
Nan Xue – The paradoxical relationship between minimalism and tourists’ pro-environmental choices (The Chinese University of Hong Kong).

Kate Price-Howard - Director of Marketing

Kate Price-Howard is an associate professor for Troy University for the School of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism Management within the Sorrell College of Business and has worked in the hospitality industry for more than 35 years. Her work during these years was primarily at resort and property management companies, but also included academia, cruise ships, summer camps, and recreation therapy. She has experientially taught commercial recreation to college juniors and seniors in an internship setting as an agency supervisor for her own company, Go Play, Inc., since 2001. She is a board member of SECSA (Southeast, Central & South America Federation of ICHRIE), and a current member of Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, and Resort and Commercial Recreation Association, and recently became an editor for the Journal of Tourism Insights.

Alessia Moretti - EuroCHRIE Representative

Alessia Moretti is an Academic Assistant at “César Ritz Colleges Switzerland”, a leader Institution in Hospitality and Culinary education. After the bachelor's degree in “Modern Languages and Cultures for the International Tourism” at University of Pavia in 2011, she worked some years in the Hospitality industry, first as a Front Desk Agent and later as an Assistant Front Office Manager. In 2020 she became Academic Assistant at “César Ritz Colleges Switzerland”, where in 2022 she joined the “Master of Arts in Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurship”, in partnership with the University of Derby. In April 2023, alongside her role as an Academic Assistant, she started to teach in the Bachelor program in Hospitality.

On Monday, 22 May 2023 from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM CT, Eta Sigma Delta students and faculty meet at the National Restaurant Association Show at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Schools that joined ICHRIE for this event were Penn State University, University of South Florida, New Mexico State University, and Rochester Institute of Technology.

THE SPRING 2023 ESD NETWORKING EVENT

The ESD-sponsored reception at the DePaul University School of Hospitality Leadership on Sunday, 21 May from 4:00 - 6:00 PM CT was a success! With over 15 faculty and 30 students, we enjoyed reconnecting with ICHRIE family and making other connections for the first time. DePaul University School of Hospitality Leadership opened their event space for our event, and we enjoyed Chicago fair including, Connie's deepdish pizza, hot dogs with all the toppings, cheesecake and Garrett popcorn.

At our upcoming 2023 Annual ICHRIE Summer Conference, we are having a closing reception on Friday, 21 July at the beautiful HEARD Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. We are excited to be sharing a real sense of place at our conference location and can’t wait to share this incredible museum with all of our conference attendees. The Heard Museum sets the standard for collaborating with American Indian artists and tribal communities to provide a distinctive perspective on the art and history of Native people, especially those from the Southwest.

Since its founding by Dwight and Maie Bartlett Heard in 1929, the Heard Museum has become recognized internationally for the quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming, and its unmatched festivals. Dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art, the Heard presents the stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective, as well as exhibitions that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary art.
 
We will be departing from the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa hotel at 5:00 PM by executive motor coaches to the Heard Museum. The reception at the Heard will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and the return coaches will be back at the hotel by 9:00 PM. The Heard is located close to the wonderful restaurants of Scottsdale, should anyone want to have dinner on their own and return by taxi or Uber. We will have a list of Scottsdale restaurants for you to consider at conference registration with contact information for any private reservations you might want to reserve.

The Career Fair is back again for the 2023 Annual ICHRIE Summer Conference in Phoenix, Arizona USA.

On Friday, 21st July, we’ll shift focus to the “education” portion of the Education & Innovation Center (EIC) when we host the Career Fair and poster presentations over lunch.

The Annual DUCK Race returns for the 2023 ICHRIE Summer Conference in Phoenix, Arizona! 

 

The NENA CHRIE Federation held its spring regional conference this year at West Virginia University’s John Chambers College of Business and Economics Hospitality Management Program in Morgantown, West Virginia from March 31-April 2, 2023. The Conference was a great success! We were thrilled to have a robust schedule of research papers and poster presentations along with keynote speakers and panelists from industry and academia, as well as interactive workshops all focused on the conference theme of “Innovate Everywhere”. Attendance was much higher than anticipated and we continue to have a growing cohort of grad students attend and present their work at this regional conference. It is wonderful to see their excitement and passion for higher education and our industry early in their career.

The ICHRIE family extends its condolences to Dr. Patrick J. Moreo’s family, colleagues, the global hospitality community, and ICHRIE Premium Member, University of South Florida.

Dr. Moreo has had a profound impact over his 50+ year career. He mentored students and faculty in a variety of roles, worked closely with industry, and touched so many lives. Most recently, Dr. Moreo was a Professor at USF's Muma College of Business School of Hospitality and Tourism Management where he was appointed Dean in 2016, providing leadership to the faculty, students, and industry constituents. Previously, Dr. Moreo served the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) in leadership roles with the International Gaming Institute and the Hospitality Research and Development Center; he was appointed Associate Dean and Professor through 2016. In addition to these contributions to hospitality education, Dr. Moreo also served Oklahoma State University, New Mexico State University, and the Pennsylvania State University.
