2025 Recipients

Chunsheng (Jerry) Jin is a Best Paper Winner from the 2025 Graduate Research Conference held at the University of Houston on 2-4 January 2025. His paper, "Validation of LLM performance for tourism and hospitality research: A guide to applying GPT for text data analysis", was co-authored with his faculty advisor, Dr. Jewoo Kim.

Jerry is a PhD candidate in the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management at Iowa State University. The CHRIE FutureFund™ is pleased to recognize Chunsheng (Jerry) Jin, and we wish him the best as he moves forward towards degree completion.

2024 Recipients

Juhwan Lim is a doctoral candidate at Kansas State University. He is the first student to win both the Dissertation Proposal Competition and the Graduate Conference Best Paper Award in the same year. His 2024 Best Paper Award from the Miami Graduate Conference was titled, 'Using machine-learning approach to predict big-five personality traits based on communication types', was co-authored with his advisor Jichul Jang of Kansas State University.

Juhwan's winning Dissertation Proposal was presented at the 2024 ICHRIE Global Conference in Montreal and titled, 'Using machine-learning approach to predict big-five personality traits based on subconscious behaviors'. The CHRIE FutureFund™ is pleased to recognize Juhwan Lim, and we wish him the best as he moves forward toward his degree completion.

Xinying Xu is a doctoral student from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a 2024 Graduate Conference Best Paper Winner. Her paper, 'Becoming a digital nomad: Exploring the happiness of remote work tourists', was co-authored with faculty advisors Haiyan Song of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Qijie Jiang of Shenzen University. The CHRIE Future Fund is pleased to recognize Xinying Xu and we wish her the best as she moves towards degree completion.

Huihui Zhang is a 2024 Dissertation Proposal Competition Winner. Her winning proposal, 'Strategizing in response to environmental uncertainty in the hospitality industry: A data-analytical approach', was presented at the 2024 ICHRIE Global Conference held in Montreal. Huihui graduated from Virginia Tech University and had already started her position at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University at the time of conference. She was unable to be present in Montreal but connected via Zoom to make her presentation from Hong Kong where it was 2 AM! That's dedication to being a professional! The CHRIE Future Fund is pleased to recognize Huihui Zhang, and we wish her the best in her professional career.

Peihao Wang is a 2024 Dissertation Proposal Competition Winner. He presented his winning proposal 'Cultivating a sustainable ecosystem for platform services businesses: A multi-stakeholder inquiry in the hospitality and tourism industry' at the 2024 ICHRIE Global Conference in Montreal. Peihao is a doctoral candidate in the School of Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management at Temple University. Wangoo Lee is a Best Paper Winner from the 2023 Graduate Research Conference held in Anaheim, California, USA. His paper, ‘Examining the “waiting line” effect during menu ordering with self-service technologies’, was co-authored with his faculty advisor, Dr. Lu Lu.  Wangoo is a PhD candidate in Business Administration with focus on Tourism and Hospitality in the Fox School of Business at Temple University. The CHRIE FutureFund is pleased to recognize Wangoo Lee, and we wish him the best as he moves forward toward his degree completion.

Swechchha Subedi is a 2023 Dissertation Proposal Competition Winner from the University of South Carolina. Each submission to the Dissertation Proposal Competition was vetted on five major criteria; innovativeness, meaningfulness, practical relevance, academic rigor, and cross-disciplinary application. Swechchha’s dissertation title is ‘Conceptualization of governance in hospitality and tourism and the role of trust.’

Wenfang (Eris) Liu is a 2023 Doctoral Proposal Competition Winner from the University of Houston.  Her dissertation proposal, ‘An exploration of ghost kitchen business model: Kitchen rental firms and entrepreneurs’ investment motivation’, was judged on five primary criteria; innovativeness, meaningfulness, practical relevance, academic rigor, and cross-disciplinary application.

Her manuscript, ‘Customer misbehavior: The joint impact of a symbolic recovery strategy and cultural tightness-looseness on observing customers’ recovery satisfaction’ was co-authored with fellow doctoral student Barbara Atanga and faculty supervisor Dr. Anna Mattila.

His proposal, ‘Leveraging the distinct competencies of highly skilled immigrant employees in hotels’, was judged on five criteria: innovativeness, meaningfulness, practical relevance, academic rigor, and cross-disciplinary application. Hamzeh is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Hospitality Management at Auburn University.

Rachel Zhang is a 2023 Dissertation Proposal Competition Winner. Her proposal, ‘Restaurant demand seasonality: Measurement, drivers, and external shocks’, was evaluated on five criteria; innovativeness, meaningfulness, practical relevance, academic rigor, and cross-disciplinary application. Rachel is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Purdue University.

Araceli Hernandez Calderon, a doctoral student at the University of Houston, is one of the Best Paper Winners from the 2023 Graduate Research Conference. Her paper, ‘Theory-driven predictive modeling for food-service crowdfunding success: An integrated approach with business intelligence and supervised machine learning’, was co-authored with faculty supervisors Yoon Koh and Minwoo Lee, both from the University of Houston.

Nan (Iris) Xue is a 2023 Doctoral Proposal Competition Winner from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her dissertation proposal, ‘The paradoxical relationship between minimalism and tourists’ pro-environmental choices,’ was judged on five primary criteria: innovativeness, meaningfulness, practical relevance, academic rigor, and cross-disciplinary application. Iris is guided by her academic supervisors, Professor Lisa C. Wan and Professor Elisa K. Chan.
