Butler Community College is seeking a full-time instructor of Culinary Arts. The ideal candidate will have a passion for sharing applied culinary and industry-related knowledge. At least 4 years of full-time industry experience is required.

Duties of this position include instruction of applied culinary skills courses in a lab setting assuring curricular relevancy, conducting assessments, and ongoingly maintaining accurate student attendance and grading records.

Must be available to teach between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. M-F. Classes can be held at multiple locations but are housed at the state-of-the-art Redler Culinary Arts Institute facility, opened in 2022. Must also be willing to serve as Culinary Arts Program ambassador in the community and at area schools as part of ongoing recruitment and retention efforts marketing both the Culinary Arts Program and Butler Community College.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Must be committed to student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Applied commercial experience in culinary arts, hospitality, food service, catering, or event management
  • Working knowledge of cooking foundations and the culinary arts as well as related techniques and commercial food service equipment
  • Knowledge of diverse cuisines
  • Adept with knife skills and cuts for meats, seafood, and vegetables
  • Knowledge of culinary nutrition, menu development, food costing, appropriate food storage and rotation techniques as well as safety and sanitation procedures.

Required experience

  • Must have a background in all aspects of a commercial kitchen operation. This includes, but is not limited to, equipment, food preparation, cooking techniques, menu development, purchasing, food storage, food service sanitation, and food costing.
  • Experience with producing stocks, soups, and sauces as well as meat handling in a commercial setting is required.
  • Applied knowledge of charcuterie, Garde Manger, commercial baking, and pastry arts is preferred.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience in culinary arts is preferred.

Required educational background 

  • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution focused in Culinary Arts, Food Service Technology, Baking, Pastry Arts, or related field, is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in teaching discipline, or related field, is strongly preferred.
  • American Culinary Federation (ACF) certification is required within one year of hire.
  • Serve Safe commercial food service sanitation certification is required within 90 days of hire.
