Position Details:
The School of Hospitality Business Management in the Carson College of Business at Washington State University Pullman, WA seeks qualified candidates for the Director of the School of Hospitality Business Management. The position is on the Pullman campus. The ideal candidate will qualify as a Tenure-Track Full Professor, however we will consider candidates at the Tenure-Track Associate Professor, Career-Track Full Professor, and Career-Track Associate Professor ranks. Candidates for a tenure-track appointment must meet the tenure criteria for the Carson College of Business. The successful candidate's director appointment, which is in addition to the faculty appointment, is a four-year, renewable appointment. Successful candidates will be expected to begin on August 16, 2024.

Summary of Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to provide academic leadership for the School of Hospitality Business Management (SHBM) in fulfilling its research, instructional, and service missions, including program and curriculum development; faculty recruitment, development, and retention; managing SHBM staff on the WSU Pullman campus; student recruitment and retention; and engagement with external stakeholders. Specifically, the Director will be expected to work collaboratively with academic and industry partners, both domestically and globally, to not only market and promote the school and its programs to prospective students, alumni, donors, employers, and the media, but also to continue to grow and improve the quality and relevance of the program within the industry. The Director will be expected to build and expand relevant industry and research relationships that create opportunities for students and foster a culture of excellence and innovation. The successful candidate will be required to teach two HBM courses per year (typically one per semester), make rank-appropriate service contributions to the school, college, university, and community, and, depending on qualifications, may be expected to conduct high-quality academic research and/or teach up to four additional courses per year.

Required Qualifications for all ranks (Associate Professor/Professor) and all tracks (Career-Track/Tenure-Track)

  • An earned Master’s degree or Ph.D. in hospitality business management or a closely aligned field from a nationally or internationally recognized university.
  • Six years of experience as an Assistant Professor (career-track or tenure-track) or equivalent.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to teaching effectively at undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated or potential ability to provide academic and administrative leadership to the School of Hospitality Business Management.
  • Demonstrated or potential ability to develop high performing teams in the academic and/or business world.
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of the hospitality industry and its trends and challenges.
  • A collaborative and global mindset that recognizes the unique opportunities inherent in a hospitality business management program housed within the AACSB-accredited Carson College of Business.

Preferred Qualifications for all ranks (Associate Professor/Professor) and all tracks (Career-Track/Tenure-Track)

  • An earned Ph.D. in hospitality business management or a closely aligned field.(For Tenure-Track) A teaching, research, and publication record commensurate with appointment to the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor as articulated in the WSU Faculty Manual and Carson College of Business Promotion and Tenure Manual.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and proven ability to market and promote the School to stakeholders, such as prospective students, alumni, donors, industry partners, and the media.
  • Relevant Industry Experience in the hospitality industry or other related business field.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with students, faculty, alumni, global industry leaders, and the local business community.
  • Ability to teach various undergraduate and graduate-level HBM courses in face-to-face and online settings utilizing active learning styles.
